Monstera Deliciosa
This Monstera Deliciosa has been nurtured from a small cutting into a thriving, leafy statement plant. Known as the Swiss Cheese Plant, it develops dramatic leaves with holes, or fenestrations, that make it instantly recognizable. Every Monstera I ship is carefully raised so it is ready to grow beautifully in your care.
Light Requirements
Monstera thrives in bright, indirect light that mimics the filtered light of its native rainforest. Place it near a window where light is abundant but softened by curtains or distance. Harsh direct light will burn the leaves, while low light will cause it to grow slower and with smaller, less fenestrated leaves. A good test: if you can comfortably read a book in the light where the Monstera sits, it is probably a good spot.
Watering
I water Monsteras when the top two inches of soil feel dry. To test, stick your finger into the soil; if it feels dry at that depth, water thoroughly until liquid drains from the bottom. Empty saucers so roots do not sit in water. Overwatering leads to yellow leaves and root rot, while under watering makes leaves droop. With practice, you will find its rhythm.
Soil
Monsteras prefer rich, airy soil. I use a blend of potting soil, peat, perlite, and compost to create a breathable medium. The goal is soil that holds enough moisture for steady hydration but drains quickly to prevent stagnation. Planting in heavy, compact soil will suffocate roots and slow growth.
Humidity and Temperature
Monstera loves high humidity but adapts to average household levels. If the air is too dry, leaves will develop brown edges. To increase humidity, mist the leaves, place a humidifier nearby, or group plants together. Bathrooms with windows make excellent spots if light is sufficient.
Growth Habits
Monsteras grow fast in the right conditions, producing large leaves that can reach over a foot wide. In nature, they climb trees with aerial roots, so giving them a moss pole or trellis indoors helps mimic that. Pruning occasionally helps maintain shape and encourages fuller growth.
Pet Safety
Monstera is toxic to cats and dogs, so keep it out of reach if you have pets.
My Personal Tip
Wipe the leaves regularly with a damp cloth to remove dust and allow them to breathe better.
